9/2/2023 0 Comments Drudge up or dredge upCONTAMINATED waste from the Hunter River will be dredged, treated and buried in 48 hours in an around-the-clock operation proposed by BHP Billiton. An environmental assessment that will be on display for two weeks from today has said the main contaminants of concern are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in particular, naphthalene derived from coking coal."Coal tar, a by-product of the coke ovens, is also believed to have been released through leaks, spills and disposal in waste pits," the assessment said."Other contaminants of concern in the sediment include ammonia, cyanide, total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and trace metals (cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel and tin)."With coal-loader expansions depending on the dredging, BHP Billiton has been under pressure from the coal industry and others to move more quickly than it has on a mammoth clean-up job brought on by the closure of the Newcastle steelmaking plant in 1999.
